§ 01

How the name works.

Fig. 2
adjective-reframe + bare category-word contrast

Cat owners pour a scoop of crystals into a box and watch them change color if something's wrong.

§ 02

Name anatomy.

Editorial read

"Pretty" is doing something unusual here. In most product names, pretty is a compliment aimed at the buyer. Here it's aimed at the product, which is an odd thing to call cat litter.

Litter is functional, unglamorous, and usually named to sound either clinical (Fresh Step, Tidy Cats) or invisible. Calling it pretty is a small provocation. "Litter" is just the plain category word, no softening, no reinvention.

So the name is two halves pulling in opposite directions. One half is a compliment the category never uses. The other half is the most boring word in the aisle.

That tension is where the name gets its personality.

§ 03

How it sounds.

Fig. 3

Pretty Litter is two plain words stuck together, and the mismatch is the whole thing. Pretty is soft, almost frilly. Litter is blunt, a little gross by association.

Say it out loud and the two halves pull against each other before they settle. Nothing about the spelling or the syllables asks anything of you, this is a name built entirely out of common words, so there's no real friction in typing it or repeating it back. The friction is elsewhere, in the fact that a word usually reserved for a nursery or a compliment is sitting right next to cat waste.

§ 04

Buyer profile.

Fig. 4

Three days deep in a vet forum at midnight, trying to read whether the cat slowing down and skipping meals is serious, the owner meets the color-change promise. The pull is the idea that the litter itself might catch something a regular vet visit would miss. This is a buyer who already spends real money on the cat, a good food, a good carrier, annual checkups, and the monthly cost reads as a reasonable trade for that kind of early warning, the price of a few premium cans against the chance of knowing sooner.

Conversion tends to come right after a scare, not before one.

Before the name does its work

standing in a pet store aisle choosing between heavy clay bags that all promise the same odor control and all deliver roughly the same result.

After

a subscription that arrives, lasts longer than expected, and quietly monitors the cat's health in the background. The job isn't just cleaner litter. It's one less thing to think about.

§ 05

What it refuses.

Negative space
  • R·01multi-cat strength performance claims
  • R·02baking soda or enzyme-based odor neutralization branding
  • R·03heavy-duty or industrial scent vocabulary
  • R·04clay and clumping as quality signals
  • R·05veterinarian-endorsement clinical framing

Every refusal is a position a competitor still occupies. The white space the name claims is built from what it declines.

§ 06

Direct competitors.

Read against the shelf

Cat litter is a grudge purchase. Most people buy whatever is cheapest or least offensive.

Tidy Cats
What their name doesPairs a functional promise (tidy) with the category word to signal easy cleanup.
How Pretty Litter differsPretty Litter replaces the cleanup promise with an aesthetic one, shifting the register from chore to experience.
Fresh Step
What their name doesUses a sensory metaphor (freshness + motion) to promise odor control and an active result.
How Pretty Litter differsPretty Litter skips the metaphor entirely and names the category directly, betting on the contrast between its two words instead.
Arm & Hammer
What their name doesBorrows heritage-brand authority from a century-old household name to imply proven cleaning power.
How Pretty Litter differsPretty Litter builds no heritage scaffold; it earns attention through the unexpected pairing of the two words alone.
Dr. Elsey's
What their name doesUses a veterinarian surname to signal clinical authority and professional-grade trust.
How Pretty Litter differsPretty Litter drops the credentials entirely and leads with aesthetics, targeting the lifestyle-oriented cat owner rather than the medically cautious one.
