The dominant habit now is the invented word, most of them the word milk pulled out of shape, as with Oatly, Malk, Goodmylk, and Numilk. That took hold because plant based founders needed a word that signaled milk without legally being milk, so bending the spelling solved a labeling problem and a positioning one at once. A few set that aside and put a real person up front, Miyoko’s Creamery and Siggi’s, giving the carton a quieter warmth. The category still feels like it is being written in real time, each carton coining its own word as it goes.
