How the name works.
Fig. 2A phone number sticks in a way a made-up word doesn't, because the brain already has a slot for strings of digits.
Name anatomy.
Editorial read818 is the area code for the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, where founder Kendall Jenner grew up. That's the whole construction. No invented word, no foreign language, no suffix doing clever work.
Just a number that points to a place. Area codes work as names because they carry geography without spelling it out. Anyone who knows Los Angeles knows what 818 means.
Anyone who doesn't still gets a number that feels specific, like it came from somewhere real rather than a branding session.
How it sounds.
Fig. 3818 reads as a number before it reads as a word, and that's the whole game with this one. That's unusual for tequila, a category full of names that lean into Spanish sounds and rolling syllables. This one refuses all of that.
There's nothing to mispronounce because there's nothing to pronounce wrong, it's just digits. The only real question is whether someone hears it once and remembers it as a name at all, or files it away as an area code.
Buyer profile.
Fig. 4The celebrity-backed bottle picked up once and put back down, the one that felt like a pitch more than a product, is what this purchase retires. This buyer already drinks tequila and has an opinion about which brands are performing authenticity versus earning it. The 818 customer wants something that came from a real place, not a marketing brief, and reads the back label to confirm it.
The celebrity connection gets them to pick up the bottle; the Jalisco sourcing and the jimador story is what brings them back for a second. A blanco at the going premium-agave price clears without much deliberation if the bottle passes a three-second credibility check.
What it refuses.
Negative space- R·01the heritage distillery claim
- R·02Spanish or Nahuatl naming
- R·03founder surname as authority signal
- R·04agave-forward ingredient vocabulary
- R·05colonial-era label aesthetics
Every refusal is a position a competitor still occupies. The white space the name claims is built from what it declines.
Direct competitors.
Read against the shelfTequila is a crowded shelf and most bottles are shouting the same things. Artisan process.
