§ 01

How the name works.

Fig. 2
lifestyle-fragment misspelling as identity hook

Durt is a dirty word wearing a clean product's job, and that mismatch is what a person actually remembers.

§ 02

Name anatomy.

Editorial read

"Surf" is the easy half. It points to ocean, sun, salt water, and the skin that lives in all of that. "Durt" is the interesting half.

It's "dirt" with the vowel swapped, and that single-letter change does a lot. It keeps the gritty, earthy feel of the original word while making the name feel invented rather than borrowed. Dirt in a sunscreen name might read wrong, like something you'd wash off.

Durt sidesteps that by looking like a new word even though it sounds almost identical. The two halves together suggest something natural and a little rough around the edges, which fits a mineral zinc product made for people who actually spend time outside.

§ 03

How it sounds.

Fig. 3

Surf and Durt are both blunt, one-syllable words, and neither one behaves the way a beauty product usually sounds. Say it and the two words knock into each other, hard consonant against hard consonant, nothing smooth about the transition. That roughness is doing a job.

Sunscreen names usually lean clinical or breezy and coastal, and this one sounds like sand actually got into it.

§ 04

Buyer profile.

Fig. 4

The surfer or outdoor regular who has burned through enough conventional sunscreen to know that the white cast, the greasy finish, and the ingredient list nobody can pronounce are all the same problem. This buyer picked up a bottle of something "clean" at a health food store once, paid health-food-store money for a tube that crumbled in the heat and smelled the part, and got nothing for it. Surf Durt is the brand they find when they go looking for something that can actually live in a board bag or a hiking pack without turning into a science experiment.

The name tells them immediately that whoever made this has been outside. The decision gets made fast, at the shelf or on the product page.

Before the name does its work

standing in front of a shelf of brands that either sound like a dermatologist's office or a yoga retreat, none of which feel built for actual outdoor use.

After

a product whose name alone signals it was made by and for people who treat sunscreen as gear, not skincare.

§ 05

What it refuses.

Negative space
  • R·01clinical SPF-forward naming
  • R·02soft purity vocabulary (pure, clean, gentle)
  • R·03reef-safe virtue signaling in the name itself
  • R·04luxury or spa register
  • R·05ingredient-as-hero branding

Every refusal is a position a competitor still occupies. The white space the name claims is built from what it declines.

§ 06

Direct competitors.

Read against the shelf

Sunscreen is a hard sell at the shelf. Most brands look clinical or corporate, and the buyer has no easy way to tell the eco-friendly zinc options apart from the rest.
