§ 01

How the name works.

Fig. 2
charged-word contrast with prestige category marker

Say the word heretic to someone and they picture a specific kind of person, someone standing apart from the group, refusing to go along with it.

§ 02

Name anatomy.

Editorial read

Heretic comes from the Greek hairetikos, meaning someone who chooses for themselves rather than accepting the received view. The Church turned it into a word for dangerous dissent. That history stuck.

For centuries, calling someone a heretic meant they had broken from official doctrine and paid a price for it. Parfum is French for perfume, and fragrance brands use French because the industry's prestige vocabulary runs through Paris. Put the two halves together and you get a name that places deliberate wrongness next to the most formal word the category uses.

The defiance is in the first word. The category credential is in the second. The gap between them is the whole point of the name.

§ 03

How it sounds.

Fig. 3

Heretic runs against type for a fragrance brand. There's no ambiguity in how to say it and no trap in how to spell it, which is unusual given how odd the choice is. That mismatch between the harsh little bite of the word and the smooth liquid it's naming is the whole point, and it survives being said out loud at a store counter.

Parfum, tacked on after, softens nothing. It just confirms the category so the first word can do all the work.

§ 04

Buyer profile.

Fig. 4

The spending choice here retires a mainstream designer bottle worn for a year, the one that slowly started to feel like someone else's signature. They weren't looking for a "natural" perfume specifically; they wanted something that didn't smell like it came from a department store counter with a celebrity's face on the box. Heretic is the brand they find when they start reading ingredient labels and realize most fine fragrances are built on synthetic compounds they can't pronounce.

They'll commit to a full bottle without much deliberation, but they'll research the brand for two weeks before they do.

§ 05

What it refuses.

Negative space
  • R·01soft botanical wellness vocabulary
  • R·02founder origin story as brand anchor
  • R·03clean-beauty virtue signaling
  • R·04legacy house heritage claim
  • R·05gentle sensory-mood naming (bloom, haze, dusk)

Every refusal is a position a competitor still occupies. The white space the name claims is built from what it declines.

§ 06

Direct competitors.

Read against the shelf

Fragrance is a crowded shelf where many brands compete by sounding expensive and correct. Heretic sounds expensive and wrong on purpose, and that's the edge.
