Say Sheep Inc.

§ 02

Name anatomy.

Editorial read

The name is two plain words pushed together with a period. "Sheep" is the animal. "Inc."

is the corporate abbreviation, short for incorporated, the suffix businesses attach when they want to look official. The period after Inc. is doing something specific.

It signals a real registered company, not a lifestyle brand playing at being one. Put those two things next to each other and the tension is immediate. Sheep is soft, pastoral, slightly absurd.

Inc. is boardroom. The name doesn't resolve that tension.

It just lets it sit there, which is probably the point.

§ 03

How it sounds.

Fig. 3

Sheep Inc. is a straight noun plus an abbreviation, and the abbreviation is what gives it away. Dropping "Inc."

onto an animal name is a small joke, a corporate suffix stapled to something woolly and unglamorous, and that mismatch is what makes the mouth pause for half a beat before saying it. Say it out loud and it sounds like a startup pitch and a farm at the same time. There's no hard sound to trip on and no odd spelling to fumble, so the interest here isn't friction, it's the collision of register happening inside two ordinary words.

§ 04

Buyer profile.

Fig. 4

Seven years into washing the same Patagonia fleece, the buyer notices where the stitching is starting to give up. They already know Merino wool is worth paying for; what they're deciding is whether Sheep Inc. gets the next decade of their wardrobe or whether they default to a name they've bought before.

This customer reads the hang tag. They want to know where the fiber came from and how the garment was made, not because it makes good dinner conversation but because brands that hid that information have burned them. They'll commit to one sweater at a serious-investment price if it means they stop replacing a handful of cheaper ones.

§ 05

What it refuses.

Negative space
  • R·01mountain or terrain naming
  • R·02aspirational lifestyle vocabulary
  • R·03sustainability-certification badge-leading
  • R·04founder-story-as-brand-name
  • R·05soft artisanal craft signaling

Every refusal is a position a competitor still occupies. The white space the name claims is built from what it declines.

§ 06

Direct competitors.
