§ 01

How the name works.

Fig. 2
plain-word modifier + category anchor

A phone case that rots is the strange fact people repeat, and Pela is the word attached to that fact.

§ 02

Name anatomy.

Editorial read

Pela is a Portuguese and Spanish verb meaning to peel or to strip away. Whether the founders landed on it through research or just liked the sound, the word brings that sense of removing something, taking off a layer. Paired with "Case," the name becomes a two-word compound that does its job plainly.

Case names the object. Pela adds the layer of shedding, of things coming off or breaking down. For a phone case designed to compost rather than pile up in a landfill, that root meaning fits the product without having to announce itself.

§ 03

How it sounds.

Fig. 3

PEH-la, two syllables, soft on both ends. It leans on the shape of pelagic, the word for open ocean, without actually using it, so there's a faint undertow of meaning for anyone who studied a little biology and nothing at all for anyone who didn't. Both readings work fine for the brand.

The letters are plain and nobody has to guess how to say it after hearing it once, but that's not the interesting part. The interesting part is that it sounds like a made-up word and a borrowed one at the same time, which gives it a little more weight than a pure invention would carry.

§ 04

Buyer profile.

Fig. 4

The contradiction lands halfway down the search results, somewhere between the reusable tote and the refilled water bottle and the petroleum-based slab of plastic already wrapped around their phone. They didn't set out to find a compostable case; they searched "phone case" and then felt the familiar guilt. Pela resolves that contradiction without asking them to give anything up.

The case has to look normal enough that they don't have to explain it, and it does. The spend buys a way to stop feeling like a hypocrite.

§ 05

What it refuses.

Negative space
  • R·01drop-protection fortress language
  • R·02tech-spec-led naming (UAG, Spigen)
  • R·03eco-prefix signaling ('green', 'earth', 'eco')
  • R·04rugged outdoor aesthetic
  • R·05military-grade certification claims

Every refusal is a position a competitor still occupies. The white space the name claims is built from what it declines.
