Raspberry Pi carries two separate reasons, both from founder Eben Upton, and neither is a metaphor for speed. Raspberry nods to an old habit among microcomputer makers of naming machines after fruit. On the second half, Upton has said, "Pi is because originally we were going to produce a computer that could only really run Python. So the Pi in there is for Python." That is a narrower claim than most people assume. It is not the mathematical constant, it is a compressed form of a language name, chosen because Python was what the first machine was meant to run and little else.
Then comes the line that almost none of the pages answering this question quote. Upton has also said that the machine his team ended up shipping was far more capable than the Python-only computer they had first imagined, so the name has, in his words, "kind of outlived its name a little bit." That is the founder of the product saying, on record, that half of its own name stopped being an accurate description of what it did almost as soon as it shipped. The Foundation kept the name anyway.

The category habit that Raspberry draws on lands before anyone reads a spec sheet. It signals small and approachable, in the way Tangerine and Apricot signaled it before, and the Foundation did not have to argue for that impression, the borrowed convention supplied it. The Pi half, being an insider abbreviation for a programming language, does the opposite kind of work. It tells the people who already care about code that this machine is meant for them, even after Upton's own account of the Python link has faded into an in-joke.
